Looking For

I'm looking for a musician to serve as my side-kick in my children's music group. You will accompany me, Uncle Devin - the Children's Drumcussionist, as a member of The Uncle Devin Show, which is an interactive, musical experience for children that uses drums and percussion to cultivate their minds - a dynamic cross between DC's Trouble Funk and Schoolhouse Rock.

An ideal candidate is someone who interacts well with children and who's instrument is mobile enough for them to perform while walking through the audience, such as a flute, clarinet, trumpet, sax, guitar, ukulele, etc.

This person is the hype member of the band, leading young audiences in jumping, clapping, dancing and more, while performing mostly original and some cover songs. Someone who can play multiple instruments and/or sing is a plus. I play multiple genres, but primarily my sound includes jazz, funk, Go-Go, Hip-Hop and more. We don't dumb down the sound. We just make it child appropriate.

Must complete a background check, have your own transportation and work well with children of all ages. Most shows are during the morning and afternoon which sometimes includes multiple shows per day.

Bio

I have been performing as a children's music entertainer since 2011, playing at libraries, schools, festivals, day care centers, museums and private events. I average over 100 paid children's shows per year. Overall, I have been performing as a drummer and percussionist for over 30 years, playing with groups such as Fertile Ground, Soul-In-Motion Players, the Lafayette Gilchrist Project, Sense of Urgency Band and Godisheus International Funk Band.

I am currently a leader in the children’s music industry. My “Uncle Devin’s Drum Tales” CD won a 2013 Parents’ Choice Presentation Award and my children's book, "The ABC's of Percussion with Music CD," was named a 2015 National Parenting Publication Awards Bronze winner. I am a professional Teaching Artist and Artist Roster member with Young Audiences/Arts for Learning - Maryland, where we conduct assemblies and write lesson plans for my Music Residencies throughout the state.

I also host my own children's music talk show on Radio One's WOL 1450 AM/95.9 FM in the Washington, DC area every Monday from 12:30 PM to 1:00 PM, which targets parents, teachers and other caregivers of children of African descent and beyond. Additionally, I am the owner and Program Director of "I Am WEE Nation Radio," a 24/7 online music radio station with an urban twist. www.IAmWEENation.com
